Hair transplants can be an unknown area for many and a bit confusing.
We have compiled frequently asked questions about FUE hair transplants so that you can be more advised before making a decision.
Is hair transplants only for men?
Hair loss can affect men and women and although FUE Hair Transplants are more popular with men, this doesn’t mean that they can’t help women suffering with significant hair loss also. A consultation with a member of our team is a good place to start.
Can I achieve a full head of hair again?
In an ideal world this would be the dream, but unfortunately as with many of our surgical procedures you will need to be patient. After you have an FUE hair transplant you will need to allow time for the hair follicles to grow – just like normal hair. This can take up to a year but you will notice a change gradually.
Will my new hair look like my old hair?
When it comes to transplanting your donor hair into the recipient area, our highly skilled team take great care to copy the growth of your natural hair which means that gradually as the hair starts to grow, it will blend in naturally to the rest of your hair.
Where does the donor hair come from?
In order for a hair transplant to work successfully you will need to take donor hair from your own head otherwise your body will reject the foreign hair. This does also mean that if you are fully bald, or your hair is not of good quality then a FUE hair transplant many not be the treatment for you.
Am I too old to have a hair transplant?
When you are young (20-30) your hair loss and hair growth pattern can be irregular and obviously hair loss can continue to worsen as you get older (30+) meaning it is more likely that you will need to have more procedures as time goes on. As long as you are in good health then it is unlikely for you to be seen as being too old for a hair transplant.
Will the new hair fall out?
You may notice some hair loss from the new transplanted area a few weeks after treatment. Do not panic, this is normal. After the hair has had an initial shedding then it will grow back strong and healthy and remain in place.
Does a larger graft mean there is more chance of success?
We are able to safely extract up to 6,000 hairs in one day. In order to achieve natural results and keep scarring to the donor area to a minimum it is important not to try and move too much hair at once. A member of our team will be able to best advise you on the size of graft that would be appropriate for you.
How does hair transplantation work?
Hair transplantation is really about relocating (transplanting) the bald resistant hair follicles from the back or side of the head to the balding areas.
This process works for a lifetime because the hair follicles taken from the back or side of the head are genetically resistant to baldness, regardless of where they are relocated to.
Will my hair transplant results look completely natural?
Hair transplantation, when done right, can be so natural that even your hair stylist will not know that you’ve had it done.
The skill and techniques of hair transplant surgeons does vary widely, as do their results. It’s important to choose the right procedure and clinic to assure that you will get completely natural results.
How long does a hair transplant procedure take?
A typical session of between 1,500 to 2,500 grafts normally involves a full day of surgery. Most patients will arrive in the morning and will have their procedure completed by late in the day.
Does the hair transplant procedure puts me in pain?
Patients are given local anaesthesia in the donor and recipient areas. Most patients find that once the anaesthesia is given that they feel no pain or discomfort during the surgery. Following surgery patients will typically feel some amount of soreness and numbness, with some mild discomfort. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how minimal the discomfort from the surgical procedure is.
What does a hair transplant cost?
Our clinic provide free no obligation consultations, with surgical sessions priced either per graft or by the session. Prices typically average around $4.80 to $6.00 per graft.
How many grafts/hairs will I need?
The amount of grafts you will need ultimately depends on your degree of hair loss, now and in the future, and on how full you desire your hair to be.
What is the recovery/healing time?
With the micro hair transplantation procedure, the incisions are very small and less invasive than past procedures. This results in more rapid healing. Most patients feel fine within a day or two following surgery, although some numbness and mild soreness can be expected for several days following surgery.
When will my newly transplanted hair start to grow?
Normally it takes between three to five months following surgery before the transplanted hair follicles begin to grow new hair. The transplanted hair grows in very thin initially and gradually grows thicker and fuller over time. After one year a patient’s transplanted hair will be fully mature and will continue to grow for a life time.
Are the results permanent?
Since the hair follicles that are transplanted to the balding areas are genetically resistant to going bald, they will continue to grow for a life time – just as if they had been left in the bald resistant donor area.
Will people know I had a hair transplant?
Immediately following surgery a patient’s recipient area is typically pink with scabs forming around the micro incisions. These hundreds of tiny incisions will heal rapidly within two weeks after.
During the first few days after the surgery a person’s hair transplants will be noticeable if there is no previous hair to mask these temporary scabs. However, most patients feel comfortable being in public without wearing a hat within 5 to 7 days following surgery.
After the transplanted hair grows out, the results should look entirely natural, even under close examination.
